Typio Updates:

Typio 3.6.4

!! Mega Update !!
Our biggest update ever! This huge Typio update includes some small fixes, huge new features and performance improvements. Let’s break it down!

New Feature – Mini Review
These lessons contain 10 randomized words focusing on the newly introduced character. That’s it, just a super quick chance to practice the new key with a little variety. In addition to accessing the Mini Review from the Main Menu, users are given an option of completing a Mini Review if they fail to meet their goals during Progress Mode.

New Feature – Free Type Edit
There are now two different Free Type Modes! In the Settings screen, there is now a Free Type Edit option which toggles between Yes and No. When set to “Yes”, typists can use the arrow keys and backspace during their Free Type lessons. The “No” option removes that ability, preventing them from changing what they have typed.

New Feature – Smart WPM
In the Settings screen, a new Smart WPM option has popped up, which toggles between Yes or No. When set to “Yes”, the WPM counter is paused while a typing prompt is being read both initially and when a user presses the Control key to hear it again. This is how Typio has always operated up until this point, providing our audible users a change to digest the information. Setting Smart WPM to “No” will cause the WPM timer to continually count down, even while the typing prompt is being read. This is a new feature added for our more visual users. If you want Typio to operate as it always has, just leave this setting on the default “Yes” option.

New Feature – Settings Hints & Text Preview
This was long overdue! When in the Settings screen, you can now press Space Bar to see and hear a description of what the current setting does. When press Space on a font or color option, you’ll also be shown a visual preview of what the text will look like during the typing lessons. This is SUPER useful for setting the program up with your low vision students.

Font Style Changes
Along with all the settings additions, some streamlining was in order. The “Font” setting has been changed to “Font Style”. Instead of choosing from a billion different fonts, you are now presented with a simpler set of options. Font Style includes options for Regular, Monospaced and Serif fonts. Each of these was hand selected by CATIS, CLVT and TVI professionsals based on the font’s usability and viewability. We tested a lot of fonts and settled on the most benefitial for the students. Best of all, this fixes an issue where the Highlight option could sometimes be a little screwed up with some fonts. Nobody likes a screwed up highlight.

Shorter Short Lessons
The “Short Lessons” setting now trims lessons down to 30 prompts, instead of 40. This is useful for those who find the standard lesson length to be a bit too…lengthy.

Snappier Speech
When navigating lists, the computer speech is now more responsive, avoiding a slight lag that could sometimes happen navigating lists quickly. Better still, there is no longer a lag when pressing a key while the typing prompt is being read. That lag could cause a delay for our quick typing low vision users but the issue has been vaporized!

Static Lists
Typio now implements a ‘static list’. Visual users will notice the selected item is now always at the top of the list, instead of having the selection move on them. Low vision users relying on eccentric viewing techniques should have a much easier time visually tracking their menu selections from now on.

Progress Mode Completion
In the past, if a user had completed a series of lessons in Progress Mode they would have to repeat those lesson later if their WPM or Accuracy goals were raised. This is no longer the case. For example, if your student’s goal was 10 WPM when they passed the first lesson, they don’t need to repeat the lesson when you raise their goal to 15 WPM.

Some Lesson Tweaks
A few lessons were tweaked to avoid some of the non-words being read as whole words. No more “vdef” being read as “Vee Def”, now its read as “V D E F”.

Capitals
When typing a capital letter, the program will now read the word “cap” instead of “capital”.

Security
When Typio makes server calls, they are now all handled via HTTPS, making the calls more secure. This is only required during the trial, activation and when checking for updates. No information is sent back to Accessibyte.

Background Nonsense
No use getting into some of the minor code tweaks that went on behind the scenes…just know they happened!

Phew! Told ya it was a mega update!

Happy Typing 🙂
