Getting started with Typio

Purpose

This guide explains the simplest way to learn the keyboard in Typio and Typio Pro, then covers the extra practice options available in each version.

How to Access

  1. Log into Typio or Typio Pro.
  2. Use the Up/Down arrows to move through the menu.
  3. Press Enter to choose an option.

Navigation & Controls

  • Up/Down Arrows: Move through menus and lesson options.
  • Enter: Select a menu item, button, or lesson.
  • Escape: Return to the previous screen.



  • Tab: Some users, especially screen reader users, may prefer to use the Tab key to move through menu options instead of the Arrow keys.

Learning the Keyboard

Typio

Typio includes Typing Pet as its main guided path for learning the keyboard.

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Typing Pet.
  2. Choose Typing Journey.
  3. Follow the tutorials and lessons for each new key.
  4. If the student meets their Accuracy and WPM goals, they move on to the next lesson.

Note: Typing Journey is all a Typio student needs to learn the entire keyboard.

Typio also includes Basic Modes for students who want to type without the pet experience. Basic Modes is optional and provides a more direct typing path, similar to Typio Pro.

Typio Pro

Typio Pro does not include Typing Pet or Basic Modes.

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Next Lesson.
  2. Complete the tutorial and lesson for the next key or keys.
  3. If the student meets their Accuracy and WPM goals, they move on to the next lesson.

Note: Next Lesson is all a Typio Pro student needs to learn the entire keyboard.

Practice in Typio

Typio uses Typing Journey as the main learning path and also includes extra practice lesson categories.

Typing Pet Practice

  1. From the Typing Pet menu, choose Practice.
  2. Choose one of the available practice options.
  • Journey Review: Practice any lesson already completed in Typing Journey.
  • Extra Practice: Choose from additional lesson categories for more keyboard practice.
  • Custom Lessons: Type lessons sent from the Teacher Dashboard.
  • Typing Tests: Take typing tests created by the teacher.
  • Mini Lesson: Type 10 randomized words based on the current letter being learned.
  • Free Type: Choose a time limit and type anything you want. Typio shows WPM and word count at the end.

Basic Modes

Basic Modes is available in Typio for students who want to work without the pet experience.

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Basic Modes.
  2. Choose Next Lesson to continue learning the keyboard, or choose Practice Typing for extra practice.

  • Key Review: Practice included Typio lessons.
  • Custom Lessons: Type lessons sent from the Teacher Dashboard.
  • Typing Tests: Take teacher-created typing tests.
  • Mini Lesson: Type 10 randomized words based on the current letter being learned.
  • Free Type: Choose a time limit and type freely. Typio shows WPM and word count at the end.

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Practice Typing.
  2. Choose one of the available practice categories.
  • Key Review: Practice included Typio lessons.
  • Extra Lessons: Work through additional keyboard lessons for more practice.
  • Professional Lessons: Practice emails, resumes, job inquiries, and other workplace writing.
  • Educational Lessons: Practice academic word lists and school-related content.
  • Focused Lessons: Target specific hands, fingers, or parts of the keyboard.
  • Literary Lessons: Type passages from books and other reading-based content.
  • Tech Lessons: Practice tech terms, internet safety, and common online tasks.
  • Misc Lessons: Practice fun and varied topics.
  • Custom Lessons: Type lessons sent from the Teacher Dashboard.
  • Typing Tests: Take teacher-created typing tests.
  • Mini Lesson: Type 10 randomized words based on the current letter being learned.
  • Free Type: Choose a time limit and type freely. Typio shows WPM and word count at the end.

    Keep it simple:
    In Typio, use Typing Pet > Typing Journey.
    In Typio Pro, use Next Lesson.

  • Use practice modes as needed: Review, Mini Lesson, and Free Type are great for extra reinforcement.
  • Check goals in Settings: Progress depends on meeting Accuracy and WPM goals.
